“In making, we dig for our lost selves our buried souls, excavating them
to shine a light in the dark places and do some soul dusting …”
— Jennette Nielsen
If you’re like me and find healing and joy through creativity… I hope you’ll find a home here. I would like to give you a glimpse into my creative process in all its chaotic, messy, real life glory, making sense of the world one creation or journal page at a time.
I have been a hoarder of artsy treasure for as long as I can remember. A Painterly Magpie who dabbles in all kinds of artmaking, that is what makes me tick. I love the creation of objects, boxes, books, dolls, personal adornments…. things you can pick up and hold in your hand. I use any and all materials, I love to sew, knit and crochet and include these fibres into my journals and other projects.
I am driven to create every day, my own Soul Dusting takes place in my Garden Studio, my story evolves as I lay down colours, marks, layers and words.
How the Painterly Magpie began
I first realised that art making allowed me to discover an essential way to connect with myself and the world when l I quit my job in 2012. At that time, I had 2 small children and was more desperate than ever to express and connect with parts of myself that had lain hidden for so long. It took me 40 years to realise that the act of creation is a compulsion to be ignored at my peril!
I believe that the creative process can and has had a transformative effect on me, as Cathy Malchiodi said:
“In bringing the artistic wisdom you have found within yourself into a larger community, you reach those deepest parts of yourself through sharing and celebrating this wisdom with others. You awaken creative energy not only within yourself but in those around you. This is a powerful act of intention that extends and deepens your creative source and its powers beyond the self”
So in the deep excavation of self, communities expand and extend beyond the boundaries of MY creativity into a collective creativity. Win-win right??
